Welcome to the Careers Department
Our well-resourced careers library is situated directly above the main school library. Sixth form students are welcome to use the resources and arrange individual guidance appointments during study periods. Students from all year groups are encouraged to visit the careers library during break, lunchtime or after school.
The aim of the department is to ensure that all students receive the information, advice and guidance that they need to make informed decisions about their learning and work. Students are encouraged to take the time to understand themselves and the influences on them as well as exploring learning and employment opportunities. As they progress through the school students will build up knowledge, understanding and skills to enable them to take charge of their careers and effectively manage their own progression through learning and work.
Mrs F Wilson is responsible for co-ordinating our careers education programme. Any student is welcome to come along to the lunchtime careers drop-ins on Mondays and Thursdays when Mrs Wilson is available to answer questions and help students find the resources they require.
We greatly value our links with parents and carers and we aim to offer support to parents as they discuss subject options and career ideas with their son or daughter. Parents are welcome to contact us either by email: wilsonf@ripongrammar.co.uk or telephone: 01765 602647 ext 229.
We also recognise that contributions from businesses, parents and former students can enrich our careers education programme and we are very grateful to those who offer an input into the programme. We would be delighted to hear from others who would like to be involved.
The careers department works closely with Mrs B Southwell who co-ordinates our statutory work related learning programme in the fourth year.
This is designed to help students gain an insight into the world of
employment through work experience and enterprise activities. Students
in the sixth form also have the opportunity to gain additional
experience of the world of employment through work experience in the
lower sixth and a range of enterprise activities.
Careers advisers representing the Connexions Careers Service in North Yorkshire regularly visit the school. Mrs Linda Howard is the Connexions careers adviser with responsibility for Ripon Grammar School. Mrs Howard provides individual careers advice and guidance to our students and also works with small groups and attends a number of parents’ evenings throughout the year.
