General Information
Ripon Grammar School has been serving the community of Ripon for well over 450 years. Although our rich heritage and tradition inform much of our daily work today, we also pride ourselves on moving forward.
The essence of Ripon Grammar can only be conveyed by visiting us. That way you can experience what makes this such a special community for your son or daughter to learn in.
We have approximately 800 students, 200 of whom are in the Sixth Form. In addition, the school’s boarding houses can accommodate up to 100 students on a weekly or termly basis. This makes us unique in Yorkshire as the only maintained state school with boarding facilities.
Academic standards are very high. Most students gain places at top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. However the importance of a rounded education remains paramount. We believe students must leave not only well qualified academically but also with a broad range of experiences and skills.
I am particularly proud of the ‘value-added’ measurement, which shows that students progress very well. In fact, Ripon Grammar was placed fifth in the whole country in adding value from KS2 to KS3. The provision of excellent facilities to enhance the educational experience is vital. Recent improvements include a Sixth Form Art Studio, a Music Recording Studio, a gallery extension to the Library with multiple Internet access stations and a refurbished Food Technology department. Future plans include a new classroom block and laboratory refurbishment, and as a result of recent fundraising initiatives, for the 450th anniversary, an outside eating area and extended hard play area have been built.
Ripon Grammar’s pursuit of academic excellence is a major goal. Yet the value of an all-round education, where talent in drama, music and sport is nurtured and developed, is also recognised. Students must be given the confidence to contribute to the school in any area where they have talent. We also provide many opportunities for students to develop leadership skills and to take responsibility as they move up through the school.
I look forward to meeting you and showing you what Ripon Grammar School can offer your son or daughter.
Martin Pearman
Headmaster
