An exciting opportunity for RGS Cricketers
An exciting opportunity for RGS Cricketers
Ripon Grammar School’s budding cricketers, having had a very successful start to the season, recently enjoyed the opportunity to learn from former England Cricketer and recipient of Wisden Cricketer of the Year, Neal Radford.
The coaching was available to all ages; juniors, intermediates and the 1st XI all having an invaluable hour of tuition. Mr Radford, who has played for Lancashire and Worcestershire as well as string of One-Day-Internationals for England, primarily focused on batting and bowling technique but also addressed the mental attitude with which a player must approach the game. Ben Crewe (1st XI Captain) commented that ‘It’s too easy to forget that you have to be in the right mind-set to succeed in cricket, talking to someone with Neal’s experience really helps’. Younger students who had not spent so much time thinking about how far they could take their enjoyment of the game left feeling inspired to go on to the next steps at club level and beyond. Clearly with his infectious enthusiasm, Mr Radford has helped to encourage a new generation of students to continue Ripon Grammar’s proud cricketing history.
The sessions were held in the sports hall with a set of four newly acquired, professional practice nets. These were kindly supplied by Radford’s own company ‘Ezy Net’ who’s products have been used at such major competitions as the 2007 ICC World Cup. An innovative design with less poles and no need for top netting means they are certainly an exciting addition to our cricketing capability. The indoor facility is already open to the wider community and benefitting local clubs who need no longer worry about our inclement weather for those crucial practice sessions. The nets and sports hall are another onward step in Ripon Grammar School’s continued enhancement, providing opportunities for both students and the area as a whole.
