Ripon Grammar School Music Department at the National Festival of Music for Youth
Ripon Grammar School Music Department have been hitting the right notes this term after achieving success at the 2010 National Festival of Music for Youth Finals in Birmingham. Two groups from the school were selected for the National Finals from the regional event in Harrogate; the percussion group ‘Fourte’ and the Ripon Grammar School Big Band, who were making their third consecutive appearance at the national jazz finals. Both groups performed to a very high standard and were praised by the judging panel for the quality of their performances, but the Big Band came in for special praise as they scooped up two prestigious national awards.
From the 23 jazz bands competing in the finals day the Ripon Grammar School Big Band were awarded the Martyn Donaldson Trust Jazz Award which includes an invitation to perform at the prestigious Cheltenham Jazz Festival in April 2011, whilst the band’s original composition ‘George’s Horn’ was awarded a special composition award. The piece started life as a GCSE music composition by one of the band’s trombone players Charles Lancaster and is dedicated to Ripon’s most famous musician Hornblower George Pickles.
Head of Music James Lancaster, who directs the band said “I’m delighted at the progress the band has made this year and to achieve national recognition is a fantastic reward for the hard work the band have done. The judging panel contained experts from the country’s best music colleges and they recognised our efforts in developing a genuine jazz ensemble, we will look forward to the opportunity to playing alongside some star names at next year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival.”
Headmaster Martin Pearman commented 'Many congratulations to Mr. Lancaster and the Big Band. This is an exceptional achievement and a just reward for the dedication, talent and ambition of the students and Mr. Lancaster'
