Adam and Eve. A Third Year Interpretation

A few weeks ago, in Religious Education, 3A and 3C were given the task of organising and performing their own versions of one of the most well known stories in the Bible, ‘Adam and Eve’. We were in groups of five and within our groups we each had the choice of roles - God, Satan, an Angel, Adam or Eve.

Every group got the same script but we could perform it however we liked – whether it was in a different setting, in costumes or just following the stage directions on the page - but there was one catch. We couldn’t change the dialogue.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how different the group performances were, considering they had the same scripts. Some groups had really thought about it, learnt their lines and their costumes suited the setting. Even the lesser organised groups added their own individual insight and perception of the story into their assessed piece. Most made an effort with their costumes, even if they just wore different colours to differentiate between the characters.

I’m sure everyone agrees that the best costume by far was by Aidan Clancy (3A), who gave a convincing and very entertaining portrayal of God. So much so that I think in future we’ll all see him in a different, revered light!

Overall, the whole task was highly entertaining and still managed to be educational; it gave us a break from everyday classroom work and we all had a lot of fun. Now we just have to wait and see who the overall best actor and actress were, though I think we all have a good idea of who the actor will be.
