Sixth Form
What we expect from our Sixth Formers
The entry requirements for our students are explained here. These requirements are designed to ensure that all students entering our Sixth Form will be able to benefit from the academic curriculum on offer. The minimum entry requirement is 6 grade B's in GCSE examinations. Many of our current students have achieved grade A*/A in the subjects they are taking at A level.
We do expect that students in the Sixth Form will be committed to hard work and to achieving their potential, and to organising their time effectively in order to achieve those objectives. Students will be supported by their subject teachers, form tutors and other staff, but ultimately it is the responsibility of each student to exercise self-discipline and to achieve the right balance between studies and other activities. As a further means of support, each student will be issued with a planner which is an invaluable aid in the organisation of time.
Sixth Formers are expected to be effective ambassadors for the school and to help with a range of activities from charity week to prefect duties. Our experience shows that Sixth Formers respond well to these expectations and fulfil these tasks with good humour and with consideration for others. Towards the end of the Lower Sixth year there will be opportunities for many students, nominated by their peers and by staff, to take on additional responsibilities as school officers, as form prefects or within the school house system.
We will, of course, seek to work in partnership with parents and guardians in striving to achieve the best for each student, and upon entry into the Sixth Form we will ask each student and parent/guardian to sign with us a commitment form which describes this partnership. A copy of this commitment form is included, along with our code of conduct, which describes our expectations of all students, at the back of the prospectus.
What happens next?
The decision, which you will take about where you wish to continue your education and the type of course best suited to you, is extremely important. You will need to research the options open to you, and to seek advice and guidance from your family, teaching and careers staff, and current Sixth Formers.
The Sixth Form Open Evening, which will be held on Monday 1st February 2010 at 6.30 pm, will give you the chance to discuss your ideas further, and to receive more details about courses and activities. The Induction programme in June 2010, which is for all students who have received offers of Sixth Form places, provides sessions in all subjects, as well as the opportunity to meet other students and to get to know the teaching and pastoral staff.
If you decide that you would like to become a Sixth Form student at Ripon Grammar School, you will find the application form here. Course Guides are here. The closing date for applications is 22nd February 2010.
We hope that you will find that this information, and what follows, gives you a flavour of our Sixth Form. Please contact us at the school if you need further assistance.
