Careers Education and Guidance
Your Entitlement as Parents and Carers
- The School’s Careers Co-ordinator, Mrs F Wilson, is your first point of contact regarding careers education and guidance for your child. She can be contacted at school or e-mail wilsonf@ripongrammar.co.uk.
- You will have the opportunity to discuss careers issues at parents’ evenings with Mrs Wilson or the Careers Advisers from igen, which is the company that currently holds the contract for careers advice in North Yorkshire schools. You are welcome to sit in on individual interviews that your child has with a careers adviser.
- There is a link governor responsible for careers education and guidance who will represent learner and parent interests on the governing body.
- An outline of the careers education and guidance programme is available on the school website www.ripongrammar.co.uk for the information of both pupils and parents and is summarised in the school prospectus and student planners.
- You have the opportunity to comment on the careers education and guidance received through parental questionnaires and surveys.
Parental Involvement
- We recognise that parents play an important part regarding their child’s career choices and we are keen to involve you in the careers education and guidance programme. As each pupil has his or her own individual needs regarding careers advice and guidance it would be helpful if you could encourage your child to be proactive in exploring different career options and in asking for support and guidance from the careers department at a time that is right for them.
- The school website is a good starting place for pupils to begin exploring their career options. They will need to follow the link to Subject Departments at the top of the screen and click on Careers down the left hand side. Whether your child is thinking about university, career choices, a gap year or looking for employment or an apprenticeship they will find up to date information and links to useful websites.
- The school also has a site licence for Kudos which is a career matching programme designed to help with career decisions and Careerscape which leads on from Kudos and provides detailed careers information, case studies and topical articles on education, training, employment and labour market information. Both these programmes can be accessed on line at www.cascaid.co.uk using the username and password available from Mrs Wilson or from Mr B Walker, Head of IT. We also subscribe to the eCLIPS series of careers guidance leaflets, which are available in the careers library or online at www.eclips-online.co.uk.
- We strongly encourage students to prepare for an individual careers interview by thinking carefully about their own personal qualities and skills and by researching career ideas using some of the resources available online or from the careers library. In this way they can really make the most of their careers interview by considering exactly what they would like to discuss so that they can draw up an action plan to help them manage their career progression. We would welcome your involvement in this process.
Parental Involvement – pro-forma
We are also keen to develop links with a wide range of organisations and would be delighted to hear from parents who may be able to offer an input to our careers education programme. Please contact Mrs Wilson if you feel that you or your employer could contribute in any of the following areas so that we could add you to our careers database:
