Careers Education and Guidance

Your Entitlement as a Pupil of Ripon Grammar School

  • All pupils will receive careers education and guidance throughout your time at Ripon Grammar School.
  • In key stage 3 you will follow a planned careers programme in PSHCE that is designed to help you to look at your own personal qualities, skills and experiences and to start to investigate future career opportunities.  This will help you to prepare for making decisions about your GCSE options.
  • In key stage 4 you will have the opportunity to plan and undertake up to 2 weeks work experience.  All pupils will receive individual advice and guidance from a qualified careers adviser and have the opportunity to research in detail your post-16 options before making decisions about your future.
  • In key stage 5 you will follow a comprehensive programme of careers education and guidance, which is delivered both within the general studies programme and through your tutor groups.  This is designed to help you develop the skills needed to effectively manage your career both at school and in the future.  All students are encouraged to arrange an individual careers appointment with Mrs F Wilson, the school’s careers co-ordinator.  Our aim is to help you to make well-informed and realistic decisions about your future.
  • It is never too early to start thinking about your career and pupils in all year groups are encouraged to use the resources in the careers library, which is situated above the main school library.  There are drop-in sessions on Monday and Thursday lunchtimes when Mrs Wilson will be available to answer questions and help you find the information you need.  Any pupils can request an individual careers appointment with either Mrs Wilson or with Linda Howard or Louise Longbottom Smith who are the external careers advisers attached to the school.  To make an appointment you can call in to the careers library – providing there is not a meeting going on you can just knock and walk straight in - or you can e-mail wilsonf@ripongrammar.co.uk
  • The school website www.ripongrammar.co.uk is a good starting place for exploring your career options.  Follow the link to Subject Departments at the top of the screen and click on Careers down the left hand side.  Whether you are thinking about university, career choices, a gap year or looking for employment or an apprenticeship you will find up to date information and links to useful websites.
  • The school also has a site licence for Kudos which is a career matching programme designed to help with career decisions and Careerscape which leads on from Kudos and provides detailed careers information, case studies and topical articles on education, training, employment and labour market information.  Both these programmes can be accessed online using the username and password available from Mrs Wilson or from Mr B Walker, Head of IT.  We also subscribe to the eCLIPS series of careers guidance leaflets, which are available in the careers library or online at www.eclips-online.co.uk using the password which is available from Mrs Wilson.  In order to make the most of your careers appointment you should carry out some research beforehand and carefully consider what you would like to discuss.
  • In addition to the above there will be opportunities to participate in a range of careers events.  These will include careers conventions, presentations from outside speakers and notification of interesting careers events that are taking place locally and nationally.  Information about these will be conveyed through form tutors and advertised on the careers notice boards.  A number of subject departments have a notice board dedicated to careers and information about events is also displayed in the careers library and on the main careers notice board located in the corridor leading from reception to the school hall.
  • You will have the opportunity to comment on the careers education and guidance service you have received and to make suggestions on how it could be further improved.
