Girls' P.E.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 and 8 our pupils are time tabled for two single (40min) and one double lesson (80 min).

During the winter and spring terms, the double lesson is given over to hockey and netball and the single lessons for gymnastics, dance and swimming. Cross country is occasionally integrated into the curriculum. In the summer the curriculum areas are athletics, tennis and rounders.

In Y9 the time allocation for PE is reduced to one single and one double lesson a week. In the single lesson swimming, badminton and a fitness unit of work are undertaken and in the double hockey, netball and football are the timetabled activities. Summer activities remain the same as those followed in Y7 and 8.

In Y9 all students gain a very valuable outdoor educational experience. They spend a week at Bewerley Park Outdoor Education Centre.

Assessement

The requirements of the National Curriculum are met throughout KS3. An ability to plan, perform and evaluate are skills that are developed in all activities. National Curriculum level descriptors are clearly displayed and are used by staff to assess the students’ performance and by pupils to self assess and set targets for improvement.

Key Stage 4

An element of choice is introduced into KS4 in order that students are able to develop their strengths, experience new activities and maintain levels of motivation and enthusiasm. Choices in the winter and spring terms include: Hockey, Netball, Lacrosse, Fitness and Cheerleading. The traditional summer activities of tennis, athletics and rounders are followed in this term.

In the single lesson swimming, including life saving and water polo, badminton and volleyball are timetabled.

All girls in Y10 follow the Sports Leaders course, which is a nationally recognised and accredited course. This further develops leadership, communication and organisation skills. Each group enjoys organising and running primary festivals and tournaments and it is very satisfying to observe the sense of achievement that is gained by our students and the enjoyment of both our students and the primary pupils involved in these events.

Extra Curricular Activities

At R.G.S. education does not stop at the end of lessons. We encourage all girls to develop their talents and abilities through an extensive extra curricular activities programme.

Activities in lunch hour and after school include:

Hockey
Netball
Gymnastics Club
Dance
Cheerleading
Swimming Clubs (Elite and Improvers)
Tennis
Rounders
Athletics clubs

Our practices are open to all girls and a full fixture list is organised for the more able to represent the school in friendly inter-school matches, area and national competitions. Those with particular ability are encouraged to progress through trials to represent the area and county, with the possible progression to national level sport.

U14 Squad - Area Champions 2005-6
U13 7-Aside Hockey Team 2008-9: Area Semi Finalists and Runners up in the Yazoo National Mini Hockey Championships (North Yorkshire Round)

All girls are encouraged to take part in the House competitions which are organised for all our main sports at both junior and senior age groups, with the Swimming Sports and Sports Day being full school events.

Links have been established with local clubs in hockey, netball, tennis, rounders and athletics and we try to facilitate the progress of our youngsters in other sports e.g. Pony Club events, triathlons, orienteering, golf, mountain biking and cheerleading.

Our annual hockey fixture before Christmas with The Old Riponians is a popular event.
