Aims of the department
PSHCE at Ripon Grammar school aims to equip pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to make the most of their lives. PSHCE covers everything from politics to personal safety and encourages pupils to examine their own morals and feelings and to consider those of others.

First years in Ripon during the 1st year citizenship day 2006
Lower School or KS3
All key stage three pupils have one 40 minute lesson of PSHCE each week. There are also a number of other PSHCE events during the school year.
PSHCE is assessed within the school by one exam each summer. The progress of the pupils is also assessed regularly using the work done in lessons and during special events.
Year 7
Course content:
- What makes a good citizen
- Charities
- Healthy eating
- Puberty
- Systems of government
- International organisations
- Human rights
- Bullying
- Study skills
Special events:
- Citizenship day
The history, customs and local government of Ripon are investigated during this day long event that includes a trip into Ripon to meet the Mayor and the Hornblower.
Year 8
Course content:
- Personal safety
- The EU
- Smoking
- Crime
- Voluntary work in the community
- Diversity and discrimination
Special events:
- Living dangerously
In a morning organised by the local police the second years take part in workshops on first aid, drugs, alcohol, fire prevention, road safety and victim support.
Year 9
Course content:
- Human rights and civil liberties
- Drugs
- Careers education
- Economic awareness and budgeting
- Politics and democracy
- Health education
Special events:
- Alcohol awareness sessions
- Bewerley Park
- Key stage 3 to key stage 4 transition workshops
Upper School or KS4 Sixth Form or Post 16
There are no discrete PSHCE lessons in Key stage 4 or the sixth form and PSHCE is delivered through the curriculum, in form time and through various special events.
Key stage 4 pupils will have more careers and work related events along with some work on STIs, alcohol awareness and study skills. PSHCE in the sixth form is delivered through the general studies lessons.
