Seth moves one step closer to his dream career

A RIPON Grammar School student is one step closer to his dream career in law after being welcomed into the policing family.

Seth Prince, 14, passed out as a police cadet in Harrogate following a 12-week training and induction programme.

The teenager, from Ripon, learnt about drill, first aid and basic policing skills to gain his attestation certificate from Inspector Paul Crabtree at an official ceremony marking his formal commitment to the service.

Seth, who swore an oath to uphold the values of honesty, fairness and service to his community, is now looking forward to being set to work in and around the Harrogate area, supporting local police and community initiatives.

Seth, who is considering aiming for a career as a lawyer, or working within the armed response or dog handling units of the police force, explained that watching true crime documentaries inspired his interest in the law.

He found the interview section the most challenging bit of the cadet assessment process: "I’d never done one before so I was a bit nervous."

The keen rugby player, who also belongs to his school chess club, said: "I'm looking forward to the volunteering opportunities and working with actual police officers."

The cadet scheme offers young people aged 13 to 18 the opportunity to develop skills through a structured programme to encourage a spirit of adventure, good citizenship and increase self-esteem and confidence. It also helps promote a practical understanding of policing among young people and aims to inspire them to participate positively in their communities.
