SPORT: Isaac is crowned pentathlon champ

North Yorkshire's U15 indoor pentathlon champion ISAAC HENSON, a member of York City Athletics Club, explains what it is about the challenging combination sport that attracts him

A PENTATHLON is an athletics competition that consists of five events - long jump, high jump, hurdles, shot put and the 800m sprint.

I was thrilled to win the pentathlon title at the Sheffield Institute of Sport recently, competing against athletes from throughout North Yorkshire and gaining some new personal bests in some of the events.

Of the five disciplines, my favourite is the 60m hurdles, which I can do in 10.9 seconds. I find the hardest event the high jump because you have to curve backwards over the bar and I think it is the event that requires the most amount of skill.

I train with York City Athletics two to three times a week - as well as playing football for York City - and have a very supportive coach who gives up his free time in all weathers and is always looking for ways to improve and develop my techniques.
