Later this month the Senior Drama Production at RGS will be taking place.Members of the 4th, 5th and 6th Form have been rehearsing since November and it promises to be wonderful and very entertaining production.
Students will be performing Oliver Goldsmith’s acclaimed comedy She Stoops to Conquer. The play explores what happens when two privileged, well-dressed, well-educated and rather pompous young gentlemen take a trip into the countryside and find themselves very much out of their comfort zone. What follows is a tremendously funny, entertaining and accessible play that explores the differences of town and country at a time when Britain was changing at an alarming pace and when traditional values seemed under threat from the modern age.
As will be revealed in the prologue to the play, when he wrote She Stoops to Conquer, Goldsmith felt that comedy and the theatre were in trouble. He railed against the sentimental and moralising comedies of his day and wrote a comedy that featured real but sympathetically portrayed characters, that mixed high and low scenes and which focused on making an audience laugh rather than teaching them moral values. At the time Goldsmith’s play was so unconventional that he struggled to find a theatre that would risk staging the play, but he eventually persuaded one Covent Garden theatre owner to do so.Despite the fact that some leading actors refused to appear in the play, it was a roaring success and audiences loved it.We hope that you will love it too.
The play will be performed on Thursday 23rd March and Friday 24th March in the school hall with performances starting at 7pm.Tickets will cost £5 for adults and £3 for concessions and can be purchased from the Upper School Office. Please pay by cash or cheque (payable top Ripon Grammar School).
The play would obviously be of particular value to A Level students of English, or those contemplating studying the subject in the future. However, the play is accessible and suitable for all and should provoke a laugh amongst students and parents alike, of any age.We hope you will be able to support our actors when they take to the stage and hope that you enjoy the show.
