CAREERS: Students gain new insights into human rights

RGS students explored issues surrounding human rights at a law school conference. AMELIA COLLINGWOOD-COOPER reports

SIXTH form students who share an interest in human rights or are looking at a career in law attended Leeds Beckett University Law School's Human Rights Conference.

It began with a mini-lecture introducing students to the basics of human rights followed by more in-depth classroom sessions and activities for smaller groups, delivered by university lecturers and student ambassadors.

The university also provided a tour of some of the campus, including reading rooms and a mock court room, followed by lunch in one of the cafeterias.

The trip was incredibly insightful not only into human rights but also the different career paths, aside from law, you can take in this sector.

The tour of the university was particularly enlightening and we gained a new perspective through meeting the student ambassadors who talked us through the campus.

The activities provided were engaging and a great tool to allow us to gain a clearer understanding human rights in practice.

Overall, everyone enjoyed the experience and found it enriching, especially as Year 12 students start to look at potential universities and courses.
