TWO budding young Ripon Grammar School journalists have had articles published in a national newspaper.
Year 8 students Sam Brickstock and Isobel Barker were delighted to discover their nature reports had been selected for The Guardian’s Young Country Diary.
Sam, from outside Easingwold, wrote about his favourite walk and favourite tree: “I was pleased and excited to get my story published,” he said.
“I love walking and this is about my favourite walk to my favourite tree. I don’t normally write for pleasure, but I enjoy reading every night before I go to sleep.”
The 13-year-old also enjoys football, badminton, skiing and surfing.
Isobel, who lives outside Boroughbridge, was also delighted to have her article about spotting wild deer in Scotland published.
"I have always enjoyed writing, particularly fantasy descriptions. In this article for The Guardian I wanted to write about the amazing scenery.
"When I heard it was to be published in the newspaper, I felt so proud and excited," she said.
The 13-year-old also enjoys swimming, touch rugby and miniature painting. A keen Girl Guider, she recently won her silver award.
The students were encouraged to write articles for the newspaper by their English teacher, Ms Helen Mars.
