CAREERS: Students immerse themselves in the world of commercial diving

RGS students enjoyed a truly immersive experience when they took the plunge into the world of commercial diving. ADAM DICKINSON reports

SOME say diving is only for holidays, scientists or James Bond. It’s an exclusive and exciting experience.

But a few lucky RGS students recently got a taste of the real thing when they took the plunge with a professional diving company in the school swimming pool.

Prior to the event, the Dagger Diving Services team came into school to talk to students about career opportunities in commercial diving, including marine engineering, salvaging and ship maintenance.

They also briefed students on the professional diving equipment they’d be using, including a £15,000 diving helmet, during their one-to-one instruction sessions in the school pool.

RGS head of careers Bob Walker said: “It was a great opportunity to discover more about diving career opportunities and a superb opportunity to experience what it feels like to wear a very expensive and very heavy diving helmet.

“Our thanks to Natalie Hogan, Daniel Tennant and Lenny Lennox from Dagger Diving Services and to Graham Livesey who helped organise the event.”
