STUDENTS truly shone during this year’s Spring Concert, an evening that proved to be a fitting celebration of dedication, creativity and musical excellence.
The concert provided a wonderful platform for ensembles to showcase the results of their hard work over the past academic year. Students from across the school came together, united by their shared love of performance. Regardless of experience level, every performer contributed to a high quality event that all involved should feel immensely proud of.
RGS director of music, Mr Barker, reflected on the evening:
“I was so proud of all the students who performed at this packed out event. Over 100 students played a wide variety of music and demonstrated their talents in our diverse instrumental and vocal groups. Congratulations to all performers, and to those who achieved their Music Colours this year. What exceptional talent we have at this school.”
The evening opened in style with the Big Band, delivering a vibrant rendition of Think, followed by Knock on Wood. Directed by Mr Barker, who also featured on saxophone, the performance immediately energised the audience, with standout solo moments adding to the excitement.
Mrs Craven’s versatile Musicality group followed with expressive performances of Seasons and Simple Gifts, delighting the audience with their warmth and musicality.
The Chamber Orchestra then took to the stage with a dynamic performance of Swamp Thang and the spirited Light Cavalry Overture. Their set flowed seamlessly into the Senior Girls’ Choir, who performed Nightingale, accompanied by the accomplished Henry Saunders, a musician who featured prominently throughout the evening. They concluded with the beautifully atmospheric Seal Lullaby, transporting the audience to distant shores.
Junior Strings brought fresh energy with Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, directed by Mrs Allison, encouraging enthusiastic audience participation. They then showcased their musical range with Latin Nights, offering a lively change in style.
The first half concluded with the Brass Ensemble, who performed Sousa on Parade before ending with a powerful rendition of Nessun Dorma. Soloist Henry Porter delivered a particularly outstanding performance, leaving a lasting impression.
Following a brief interval, filled with careful rearrangement of instruments and staging, the second half began with the Wind Band. Their lively set featured At the Movies with Danny Elfman, followed by the energetic Trailblaze.
Year 12 student William Renton then led the Guitar Ensemble, bringing together players of all levels. Their performances of The Scientist and Don’t Stop Believin’ were met with great enthusiasm from the audience.
The Man Choir followed with a heartfelt rendition of Danny Boy, before introducing a jazz influence with Blue Moon, showcasing both sensitivity and style.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of Music Colours and certificates. Congratulations were extended to dedicated musicians in Years 8, 10 and 12 in recognition of their commitment throughout the year. Full Music Colours, represented by music ties, were awarded to William Renton and Henry Saunders, honouring their exceptional dedication to the department.
The concert concluded with the Chamber Choir, who charmed the audience with Nice Work If You Can Get It, complete with playful American accents, before closing the evening with the serene and evocative Lunar Lullaby.
