Results add up for multi-talented mathematician

A GIFTED mathematician whose talents also extend to county athletics, music and the stage is celebrating after securing a clean sweep of four A*s at A-level.

William Keens, from Easingwold, excelled in maths, further maths, chemistry and physics to win his place to study mathematics at the University of Cambridge.

The delighted Ripon Grammar School student said he was happy to see years of hard work ‘finally add up’.

“I’m absolutely delighted with my results and looking forward to continuing my educational journey at Cambridge.”

The 18-year-old has built an impressive record well beyond the classroom.

Recognised as one of the country’s leading young mathematicians, he has attended the prestigious UK Mathematics Trust summer school twice – returning the second time as a mentor to younger students – and previously won a Cambridge offer after excelling in the highly competitive admissions process.

His mathematical success has been matched by achievements in chemistry, where he was among the top performers nationally in this year’s International Chemistry Olympiad, scoring an outstanding 57 marks to earn a coveted gold award.

Away from academic life, William has represented Yorkshire and Humberside twice in the London Mini Marathon, achieved Grade 8 piano and Grade 5 saxophone, and has played first saxophone in Ripon Grammar School’s Big Band for the past three years.

This year he also took to the stage as Fagin in the school’s production of Oliver!.

William said: “I have loved my time at sixth form and truly believe Ripon Grammar School has given me the best end to my school life I could wish for.”

Looking ahead to Cambridge, he said he is excited to immerse himself in mathematics while continuing to pursue his interests in running and music.
