A Group of enthusiastic design technology students from Year 9 and Year 12 had the opportunity to visit Additive-X for an inspiring insight into the world of additive manufacturing.
The visit began with an introductory talk, where students were introduced to the wide ranging applications of 3D printing and the innovative work being carried out at the facility.
They then explored some of the real-life design problems the team has tackled, even getting hands-on with examples to better understand the iterative design process in action.
A highlight of the trip was touring the impressive range of equipment on site. Students were able to see the range of 3D printers and examples up close, broadening their understanding of how additive manufacturing extends far beyond simple plastic models.
The experience sparked curiosity throughout the group, with students asking thoughtful and insightful questions.
Ellie commented, “It was really incredible to see 3D printing on such a big scale and it helped improve my 3D printing knowledge which I can apply to my A-level studies.”
Holly shared: “I loved learning about how things are made through the iterative process. I enjoyed playing with all the test pieces and seeing the possibilities within printing.”
One Year 12 student added, “I enjoyed seeing the breadth of 3D printing and how it's not just plastics.”
Overall, the trip was a valuable and inspiring experience, giving students a deeper appreciation of modern manufacturing techniques and their real-world applications.
Mrs Stevenson, who organised the trip, extended a huge thank you to the team at Additive-X for allowing Ripon Grammar School design technology students to visit again.
