Fieldwork, teamwork and discovery

YEAR 12 biology students enjoyed a field trip to the beautiful island of Cumbrae, in the Firth of Clyde, well known for its varied coastal habitats and rich marine life.

The island is an ideal location for biology fieldwork because it offers easy access to rocky shores, sandy beaches and shallow coastal waters where students can study biodiversity, marine ecosystems, adaptations and ecological sampling techniques.

Students stayed at the University of Glasgow's well-established marine field station Millport, which supports education and research in marine biology and environmental science.

The trip provided an excellent hands-on opportunity to investigate coastal ecology in a real-world environment while developing practical scientific skills, taking biology out of the classroom and into the natural world.
