RGS students crowned Debate Festival champions

RGS students were crowned champions of the North Eastern Intermediate Debate Festival after delivering an outstanding performance in the final against hosts Yarm School.

The winning team of Beth Massey, Faith Harford and Flora Rogers impressed judges throughout the competition with their confidence, charisma and persuasive debating.

Their logical and well-structured arguments, which demonstrated an understanding of current issues far beyond their years, earned them victory in the highly competitive final.

The festival, held at Yarm School, brought together students from Years 7 to 12 from schools across the region, including Yarm School, Malton School, Royal Grammar School Newcastle and Conyers School.

RGS entered three teams, all of whom represented the school with distinction.

The day began with a series of workshops led by Yarm School staff and sixth form students, giving participants the opportunity to develop their debating skills before taking part in competitive debates against other schools.

RGS teacher Mrs Dodd, who accompanied the students, said: “All of our students performed exceptionally well throughout the day, demonstrating confidence, critical thinking and excellent teamwork.

“The success of Year 9 students Beth and Faith and Year 8 student Flora in securing the festival title was a fitting reward for their outstanding performances and an achievement of which the whole school can be proud. It was an absolute privilege to watch them and I could not have been more impressed.”
