SCHOOL TRIPS: Four fantastic days in France

From iconic landmarks and river cruises to market challenges and château competitions, our Year 8 French trip combined culture, adventure, and friendship

BEFORE dawn had even broken over England, 115 Year 8 students set off on an adventure that would take them across the Channel and into the heart of France.

What followed was four days packed with famous landmarks, friendly competition, French culture, and memories that will last for years, with the group quickly settling into French life.

On their first evening, they chose between a lively PGL tournament and the chance to master the art of making authentic crêpes, with both activities proving a big hit.

The following morning, excitement levels soared as they headed into Paris – and their first day in the capital did not disappoint.

Students admired the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral and stood beneath the towering Eiffel Tower before boarding a Bateau Parisien for a cruise along the River Seine.

Gliding past some of the city’s most famous sights offered a unique perspective on the French capital.

The adventure continued with visits to the Arc de Triomphe and the historic Place de la Concorde and the afternoon brought an opportunity to explore one of the most famous museums in the world, the Louvre, home to centuries of artistic treasures.

Back at the château that evening, the competitive spirit returned with more tournaments and crêpe-making competitions.

Sunday offered a different kind of challenge. At a traditional French market in Brie-Comte-Robert, teams were tasked with purchasing ingredients for a lunch-making competition.

Armed with their French phrases and shopping lists, pupils negotiated with local stallholders before returning to prepare their creations. The results were impressive, demonstrating teamwork, creativity, and a willingness to embrace French culture.

In the afternoon, they returned to Paris to explore the artistic district of Montmartre, wandering through the bustling Place du Tertre, surrounded by artists and performers.

The visit culminated at the breathtaking Sacré-Cœur Basilica, where stunning views across Paris provided the perfect backdrop for photographs and reflection on everything the group had experienced so far.

That evening, a fun-filled disco ensured a memorable final night.

Despite the long journey home, with new border controls leading to delays, spirits remained high as pupils reflected on an unforgettable few days.

Huge thanks to the 14 dedicated RGS staff who made this amazing trip possible.

Student feedback:

“We went to a lot of exciting sites, but I really enjoyed the Arc de Triomphe! It was a lot bigger than I'd imagined it and I just walked around it with my friends which was fun. The trip was really enjoyable, though the weather was extremely hot!” said Jonathan Pang.
