SPORT: RGS athletes enjoy benefits of city's triathlon club

RIPON Grammar School students are among the many successful young athletes enjoying the benefits of the city’s own junior triathlon club, NYP Tristars.

The club, which boasts fully-qualified British Triathlon coaches, provides swimming training all year round at the RGS pool, in addition to biking and running sessions from April to September at the racecourse lake.

Athletes, including RGS students James Pollington-Clyne, Angus Millar, Alfie Millar and Jay Swaine (pictured above) have achieved huge success in competitions this season, with James coming fifth in the Yorkshire Series and Alfie selected for the Yorkshire squad. And Simon Bordewich (pictured below) triumphed in his age group in the club championships.

Members, aged from eight to 18 years, are also encouraged to take part in annual club championships, where they try outdoor swimming in a relaxed triathlon event.

NYP Tristars chair Andrea McAuslan says: “We know how important activity and sport is for mental and physical wellbeing. We provide a relaxed but motivated atmosphere for young people to flourish in a safe environment.

“Whether your interest is swimming, cycling, running or all three, we strive to develop individual skills whilst being part of a team and no previous experience of triathlon is required.

“Our focus is on fun and enjoyment while training and we also put on social events through the year.

“We have our annual end of season BBQ and
prizegiving, ad hoc social events such as a trip to Agility in York and
we are planning a session at the Brownlee Centre for some winter
cycling.”

She added: “Triathlon teaches values of hard work and persistence but above all will provide a setting to be fit, active, happy and healthy.”
