SPORT: Students do RGS proud in last cross country race

FOUR talented Ripon Grammar School athletes were among the 48 top runners selected to represent North Yorkshire in national cross country championships held shortly before the school sporting calendar was cut short.

Taking part in the National Schools Cross Country Championships in Liverpool - the last major sporting event before lockdown - were Mena Scatchard, Phoebe Hall, Archie Lawson and Toby Antcliffe.

With the support of two members of RGS staff - who joined the North Yorks squad as team managers - the students were up against the most talented cross country runners in England, all competing to be crowned English Schools Champion and follow in the footsteps of Paula Radcliffe, Mo Farah, Alistair Brownlee and Old Riponian Donna Riddler as winners of the race.

All four students did Ripon Grammar School, and North Yorkshire, proud, with Mena finishing an impressive 29th and Pheobe coming home 218th in the senior girls' race. In the boys' senior race Archie put in a great performance to finish in 160th, with Toby in 216th.
