Students inspired during visit to historic British Army base

Ripon Grammar School's military families' liaison officer EMMA SAYERS reports on a memorable day out for our students from Forces' families

RIPON Grammar School students marked the Month of the Military Child with a memorable and inspiring visit to the historic British Army base of Claro Barracks, which served as a major military engineering site from 1915.

After a sunny walk to the camp alongside Maggie from the Army Welfare Service, the group received a warm welcome from Welfare Officer Matty and Lieutenant Commander Vanessa of 52 Engineers. The visit offered a unique opportunity for students to gain insight into military life and the wide range of opportunities it presents.

Vanessa proved to be a highlight of the day, delivering an engaging and motivational talk. A dedicated hockey player, she has represented the Army team internationally, including in Barcelona, and has already taken part in several battle studies during her first year of service. Her achievements and confident presence made a strong impression on the students, with one describing her as “competent, confident and comforting.”

The visit was particularly impactful in showcasing women in leadership roles within the Armed Forces, leaving many students feeling encouraged and inspired.

The experience comes ahead of the upcoming Ripon Weekend on 9 and 10 May, which promises to be another exciting opportunity for young people to explore what the Army has to offer.

Organisers also expressed their gratitude to Maggie for her ongoing support of service students, as well as her thoughtful contributions that always help make visits special.

Looking ahead, plans are already underway for further activities, including a coffee afternoon later in the year and a military-themed trip to Flamingo Land. During the visit, students will explore the engineering behind rides and learn about animals from countries connected to their families’ military experiences.

The programme continues to play an important role in supporting service students, helping them build connections, develop new interests, and celebrate their unique place within the military community.
