Astronomy Night 2023

Astronomy Night 2023

Following exceptional responses in previous years, and after a break for COVID, FRGS is delighted that Mr Barker, teacher of Physics and Head of Astronomy, is happy to present another Astronomy night on Wednesday, 22 February. During the presentation he will provide a variety of telescopes and binoculars especially for you to carry out some star and planet gazing of your own.

We are hoping specifically to see Jupiter, a very thin crescent Moon, Orion, Mars and a nebula or two this year! Fingers crossed the British weather is on our side.

The event will take place on Wednesday 22February, at 6.15pm. The following night, Thursday 23 February, will be a back-up in case of poor weather/visibility on Wednesday. Please note that if Wednesday is cancelled, the evening will still go ahead on Thursday no matter what, so when you book a place(s), please be available for either night at short notice.

Places will be sold on a strictly first-come, first-served basis at a cost of £10 for adults and £5 for school aged children, which includes tea, hot chocolate and cake as well as the incomparable expertise of Mr Barker and some of his senior students to take us to a galaxy far, far away…. Children must be over 6 years of age and, if under 14, accompanied by an adult. All proceeds go to the School to provide additional extras for our children.

Would guests please meet outside the main school reception [Bishopton House] at 6.15pm. From there you will be guided to the Sixth Form building for the presentation which starts at 6.30pm. During the presentation there will be a trip outside to view the night sky through the telescopes and binoculars provided, before returning inside for refreshments, the second part of the presentation and a final observation session. We aim to finish by 8.45/9pm. Suitable footwear for the grass, and warm clothing, are strongly recommended, and extra binoculars, if you have them, might be useful.

Please note that parking on the school site that evening will be restricted due to other events taking place. You may therefore wish to park on Clotherholme Road.

Places are available to purchase now on ParentPay - these evenings are extremely popular so please don’t delay in claiming your spot!

Thank you for your continued support - we look forward to seeing you for another amazing, star-filled night!
