Students enjoy a Malham Cove adventure

Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic day of exploration and discovery at Malham Cove, taking in spectacular scenery, learning about the local landscape and making new friends along the way. Report by  LUKA STEPHENSON and IRIS NAYLOR

THE day began with an enjoyable bus journey before we arrived in the picturesque village of Malham, where we stopped for a quick snack before setting off on our walk.

We explored the pretty village, crossing a small bridge and walking through woodland before stopping at a fascinating National Trust farming building. We then continued towards the impressive Malham Cove, where we learned about its geology and the natural features that make it such a remarkable place.

When we got our first proper view of the enormous limestone formation, there was a collective ‘WOW!’ from our group. The climb to the top was certainly worth the effort, rewarding us with incredible views across the surrounding countryside.

After exploring the limestone pavement, with its fascinating cracks and rocky formations, we found a lovely spot for our picnic lunch. There was more exploring and photography before we continued our adventure across the rocky landscape and up a long, grassy hillside.

We also discovered some ancient-looking round houses built into the hillside, which we enjoyed exploring before reaching one of the highlights of the day – a fantastic grassy slope that was perfect for rolling down!

After all that activity, we were ready for a well-earned snack from a local food truck before making our way back to the bus.

We also learned about nearby Janet’s Foss, a beautiful woodland waterfall surrounded by trees. Local legend has it that the woodland is home to fairies, although unfortunately we didn’t manage to spot any on this occasion!

With its mixture of spectacular scenery, interesting geography, woodland adventures and plenty of laughter, our trip to Malham Cove was a brilliant day out. We returned to school tired but happy, with lots of memories of a wonderful Year 7 adventure.
