Students vote for a charity close to home

RGS students have chosen Yorkshire Cancer Research as this year’s Charity Week cause.

The annual fundraising week will take place from Monday October 19 to Friday October 23, with students and staff already planning a packed programme of events.

Every year, Charity Week sees the RGS community come together to raise thousands of pounds through a host of popular activities, including fun performances, quizzes, cake sales and a non-uniform day.

This year’s chosen charity, voted for by students, funds researchers and cancer experts who pioneer early diagnosis and discover new and better treatments for people with cancer - life-giving medical breakthroughs which are helping more people survive cancer in Yorkshire and beyond. 

Head girl Amelia Briggs said she was proud that students had chosen a charity with such strong local connections.

“I feel very proud to know that we are supporting a local charity, which I’m sure will be very personal to many members of the RGS community. With cancer having devastating effects on so many people, we really hope that our efforts with Charity Week this year can make a difference close to home.

“We’re in the stages of planning some really exciting events for this year, and we are certain everyone will be onboard to get involved!”

Head boyWill Renton said the week would be a chance for the whole school to have fun while raising money for an important cause.

“I’m excited to support a local charity which cares for and looks after so many people in our area. This is a great charity, and along with some other events, Charity Week will be an amazing opportunity for us to come together as a school, have fun and most importantly fundraise for a charity that will make a real difference to people affected by cancer across Yorkshire.”

With preparations now under way, students can look forward to another action-packed Charity Week - and the chance to make a real difference to a cause close to home.
