THREE Ripon Grammar School students have won awards for their outstanding work in a National Year of Reading ICT Reading Survey project.
Lucia Ortegon-Goulding, Charlotte Cassell and Liv Jeffery impressed judges with their creative and insightful projects, earning books and a box of reading-themed prizes.
Their award-winning work is now being displayed in both Ripon Library and the RGS school library.
The project, a collaboration between the ICT and English departments, helped students develop a range of skills, including Microsoft Excel, survey design, data analysis and presenting findings using PowerPoint.
The girls’ surveys revealed several interesting trends about reading habits, including that younger readers tend to read more frequently than adults, although for shorter periods of time.
Mystery and crime emerged as the most popular genres overall, while libraries were found to be both important and popular for the vast majority of people they surveyed.
The trio also created original book cover artwork using Excel and wrote detailed reviews of their favourite books.
Among the books reviewed were Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson, described as ‘exciting, unique and adventurous’;Finding Bear by Hannah Gold, praised as ‘an epic adventure which demonstrates love and the importance of conservation’; andI Am Rebel by Ross Montgomery, which was highlighted as ‘a story which shows how war affects ordinary lives and reminds us that bravery isn’t about fighting - it’s about loyalty and never giving up’.
Elizabeth Goddard, teacher of design & technology and ICT at RGS, praised the students’ efforts.
“They produced some excellent work, including very creative artwork and detailed book reviews, and some of the survey findings were very insightful and give a helpful perspective on the reading habits of the people they surveyed,” she said.
The success of Lucia, Charlotte and Liv highlights the value of combining digital skills with a love of reading, making the National Year of Reading project both educational and inspiring.
