CLUBS & SOCIETIES: Have your say

Debating Society chair NANCY MANNERS reports on the first House tournament of the year, where students discussed everything from nuclear weapons to the death penalty

OUR inaugural House debating tournament was a resounding success, organised by the Debating Society (run by myself and supervised by the wonderful Miss Dodd) it featured fantastically talented students from Year 7 to Year 11, who took to the floor to take on complex and controversial issues, from nuclear weapons, to private education, the death penalty to compulsory voting.

There was some brilliant talent on display, both from our more seasoned debaters who have been representing the school all year, and from those who have never tried debating before. It was a wonderful opportunity for some of our older students to show off their impressive skills, and for our younger ones to find a new hobby, and for some a new passion.

A special congratulations goes to the members of De Grey House who won both the KS3 and the KS4 competitions, and to Ava Reeves, Libby Lamb, Nancy Manners, Anson Fong, Eddie Cassell, and Yanxi Wang, who were all chosen as Best Speaker by the judges in their respective debates.

A huge thank you goes to Miss Dodd, and to all the other staff who joined us as guest judges.

House Debating will of course be back next year, and in the meantime, Debating Society will be continuing on Friday lunchtimes in SF 5/6, and we have great aspirations for inter-school competitions in the coming months. We hope to see you there!
