DESIGN TECHNOLOGY: The ring makers

MORE than 40 creative students have enjoyed silver jewellery-making workshops at school, thanks to funding from Friends of RGS.

The Year 7 and 8 students have learnt how to solder, shape, texture and polish the silver during their sessions with design technology teacher Mrs Stevenson.

The classes have been so popular that Mrs Stevenson plans to run a series of silver stud earring workshops, which will be advertised shortly, next.

“I have had numerous students asking if they can take part in further workshops,” said Mrs Robinson, one even asked if we could make more rings as, after her mother sent a photo of her ring to the family, aunts and cousins are all asking for one too!

Mrs Stevenson is also running a staff workshop: “Staff have come up with their own designs that are a lot more ambitious! Some of the works still in progress include individual pieces to represent their children, spinner rings and stone setting.”

She added: “I am very grateful for the new tools and equipment funded by the Friends of RGS, which have benefited students in both the silver jewellery workshops and in lessons.”
